Let's meet our LAA! Here's SUTBSAA!
Meet the Local Alumni Association for Southern University (SUTBSAA)! SUTBSAA was started with the goal of reconnecting the members of Zeta Zeta, the TBSigma chapter from Southern University.
“As COVID was present and families were reaching out in the Zoom world, we reconnected and felt a strong desire to come together,” said Phaedra Dinkins from SUTBSAA. “Another strong desire is that our chapter is inactive and we want to show a stance of unity.”
SUTBSAA continues to foster the values of Tau Beta Sigma by holding monthly meetings to reconnect and serving their local and school communities through workshops, social events, convention attendance and community service. They’re in the process of planning Homecoming reconnection activities, which will include hosting a meet and greet, catered meal and games to facilitate strengthening bonds of sisterhood and brotherhood.
In addition to fostering community among alumni, SUTBSAA connects with current and recent members of Southern University’s band program. “Some of us did not have the opportunity to march, as girls were not allowed in the band when we pledged. We served all bands, and only performed in the concert band.” Dinkins said. “So it is amazing to be able to hear the stories of what being in the SU marching band was like.”
SUTBSAA is also stays connected with the university’s band program. “We will be really happy to have our chapter reinstated and welcome new members into the sisterhood,” Dinkins said. “Our chapter has always been small. Females are very plentiful in the band now and this will be a great boost in helping us to grow.”
